Discussion: Best Practical Reuse

V3_judges2

The top ten practical reuses of the orange bin as selected by the judges are shown below.  Included in the 102 entries in the “practical category,” there were multiple ideas that were similar, (ie: using the orange bin to take returnable cans and bottles back to the store.)   The judges had the difficult task of diligently reviewing each entry to select these finalists.

Remember, these are our friends and neighbors of all ages who submitted these ideas. We welcome constructive, respectful and positive comments if you wish to post.

Our orange bin isn't at all worried about the big blue replacing her... She knows her value as part of the family...and will transition employment to recycling of bottles and cans and enjoy trips to redemption! See photo!

My family uses wooden I-shaped racks along the ceiling of our garage to hang up the old orange recycling bins and save space!  I think this is a great practical reuse of the bins.

When I see bright orange, I think SAFETY! Every Windsor family could use their recycling bin to build an emergency preparedness kit. We filled ours with bottled water, flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit. The bright orange bin will be easy to locate, even in a power outage!

With four drainage holes and free compost from the Windsor landfill, the recycling bins can begin their next chapter as perfect planters for cultivating organic vegetables.  It can be used YEAR AFTER YEAR. Their color and distinctive Windsor logo will make "little orange" upcycled planters a badge of recycling pride.

These bins could be donated to the Windsor Food Bank to use for distributing or collecting donations of food. After a complete sanitation of each bin, the food bank can place a sticker over the side of the bin and use them to distribute food to families in need.

Since I recently spilled gasoline in my trunk, I thought to use my old recycling bin to keep any containers from tipping over. It's great for groceries too!

Our idea was to use the recycling bin as a cooler. We insulated the bin with bubble wrap before filing with ice. Our recycling bin serves as a place to put drinks and food items to keep them cool. With the handles, it can be easily used on the go.

Use the bins as a place to collect returnable bottles and cans.  When one goes shopping, he or she first returns the bottles and cans and then places the bin in the shopping cart.  Bagged items can then be placed in the bin, making it easy to transport from car to house.

Topic: Rolling Tote

Teach your recycling container some new, useful skills! Begin with training wheels! (available at Wal-Mart). Then add some rope and a short tube and you'll have a very practical rolling tote for all your home work. Wheels bolt on easily, and adjust. Knot the rope to any comfortable length.
