The town received a grant to put together a plan to encourage Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and to strengthen town center. The plan will help us take advantage of planned increases in commuter rail service and redevelopment opportunities that exist now or might exist in the future. The goal of the many residents, business owners, steering committee members and consultants who helped draft the plan was to create a vision for Windsor Center as a place that is:
- Walkable and connected
- Full of vitality and a diverse mix of offerings
- Attractive and distinctive
The plan describes some keys to the future of Windsor Center, including:
- Broad Street should be narrowed and its intersections should be redesigned to increase on-street parking, slow traffic and improve the walkability
- Transit, parking and mobility should be improved by constructing a parking deck behind town hall next to the commuter rail platform
- Developing the land on Mechanic Street east of the railroad tracks as multi-family residential, commercial or live-work units
- Redevelopment of underused or vacant properties to add vitality and expand offerings in town center
The next steps of the Town Center Plan include asking more people to share their thoughts on the plan and to begin the tasks identified in the plan.
